Clarissa Harlowe Barton (December 25, 1821 – April 12, 1912) was a pioneer American teacher, nurse, and humanitarian. She has been described as having had a "strong and independent spirit" as in one story, the head nurse wanted all the nurses to wear black or brown so they wouldn't flirt with the soldiers. It is said that Clara Barton didn't want to be plain and insisted on wearing dark green. Clara Barton is best remembered for organizing the American Red Cross in 1881. It is this story above that prompted the color of fabric for my Clara Barton Costume. |

Right ~ “William Ludwell Sheppard's watercolor In the Hospital, 1861 pays tribute to those women of the South who labored ceaselessly to care for the war's wounded.” ... Right ~ Possible tribute to those women, but this may also be the Soldier's wife, reading the local Newspaper to her husband. In any form, notice the length of the dress she is wearing. G. S.
